Our Research Center
In recent years, we have outlined a line of work that aims to stage a different approach to the teaching of grammar within the framework of Computational Linguistics. The assumption is that we can generate explicit knowledge about language through metalinguistic reflection, with hypotheses that can be tested and demonstrated using software. We believe that Computational Linguistics can be an effective resource for teaching grammar and a useful tool for gathering information about how learners use written language. This leads us to develop new pedagogical techniques aimed at supporting learners' understanding of the language, as well as encouraging them to acquire new knowledge.
Our primary interest is focused on developing the most appropriate procedures to enrich pedagogical practices in the classroom, especially those related to the teaching and learning of English and Spanish as a first or second languages, without excluding ongoing research for other languages. We are trying to find answers to many of the problems observed, paying special attention to the difficulties students face in understanding and producing texts in everyday practice. The NooJ platform, developed by Max Silberztein, offers a versatile language engineering environment. It brings together a set of attractive advantages among which the direct interaction with the tool, not as a passive but rather as an active user, stands out, because:
- it can be downloaded free of charge for academic purposes (download link: Downloads (univ-fcomte.fr))
- allows linguists and researchers coming from different language backgrounds to work together in an integrated way
- can present linguistic descriptions from different grammatical points of view
- allows users to enter data from a given language and interact in the creation of dictionaries and grammars at the morphological and syntactic levels
- enables language learners to link the process of understanding their first language with the learning and understanding of second languages from a broader point of view of metalinguistic reflection,- it helps users to perform automatic translations and to process large corpora of texts.
Focus and scope
The journal Aprendo con NooJ is an electronic publication edited by the Centro de Estudios de Tecnología Educativa y Herramientas informáticas de Procesamiento del lenguaje, (UNR) aimed at researchers in general, educators and the general public interested in the topics proposed by the journal. From 2024 we will adopt the model of continuous publication so that each article will be published as soon as it has been approved and edited without waiting for the volume to be completed, thus reducing publication times.
The objectives pursued are:
- To provide specialists in the field to publish their work known free of charge.
- To make available to educators the advances in research on natural language processing (NLP) research.
- Stimulate team research and networking to overcome geographical, cultural and socio-economic barriers.
- Contribute to the cultural heritage of humanity by preserving linguistic diversity, especially native languages.
The area of interest relates to:
- Natural language processing applications: automatic paraphrasing, text mining, text generation, machine translation.
- Corpus linguistics. Teaching of mother tongue, second or foreign language. ICT applied to linguistics and language teaching. AI applied to education.
It has a global geographical scope. We publish research papers as well as book and journal reviews.
Peer review process
Our review system is a peer review process. Articles to be published in the journal are evaluated by at least two external reviewers, specialists in the field. The reviewers can be either national or foreign specialists. The reviewers will be appointed by the Editorial Board and/or the International Scientific Committee and will perform a critical and exhaustive analysis of the articles. The evaluation will be double-blind, i.e. the reviewers will not know the author of the article and the author will not know who the reviewers are. Articles may be rejected, accepted with conditions or accepted without conditions. If the article is accepted with conditions, the author must make the improvements requested by the reviewers and the Journal within the specified time, or provide any additional information requested to verify the validity of the conclusions and of the study itself.
To be published, an article must have a positive opinion from both reviewers. If one reviewer is positive and the other is negative, a third reviewer will be sought. If the third reviewer's opinion is negative, the article will not be published, but if it is positive, it will be considered for publication.
The journal management together with the Editorial Board will finally accept or reject the articles, based on the opinion of the International Scientific Committee and the reviewers. If the article is accepted for publication, the author will be notified about it by e-mail.
Plagiarism or redundant publication policy
Papers to be published must be original and unpublished, although papers that have been reported as a short notes, communications or abstracts in the proceedings of a congress may be accepted, provided that the underlying text on which it is based is properly cited and that the changes involve a substantial alteration of what has already been published. These circumstances should be specified and the original publication should be appropriately cited. When submitting their article, authors are asked to declare that the article has not been previously published or submitted for review to other journals. Authors will also be asked to declare that they are following the Instructions for Authors, which state that articles submitted must be original.
Upon receipt of the article and prior to the review process, Internet search tools will be used to confirm originality and to avoid plagiarism practices. If necessary, the manuscript may be checked using the Crossref Similarity Check service. Likewise, reviewers are asked to look for signs of plagiarism when submitting the manuscript for evaluation, as they are familiar with the specific literature on a topic. If redundant or duplicate publications are found, the guidelines established by COPE - Committee on Publication Ethics https://publicationethics.org/files/Spanish%20%281%29.pdf
Open Access Policy
The journal provides immediate free access to its content in accordance with the principle of making research freely available to the public, thereby fostering greater global knowledge sharing following the guidelines of the Budapest Open Access Initiative https://www.budapestopenaccessinitiative.org/boai-10-translations/spanish
Copyright, Access and Reuse Policy
Authors submitting articles for publication in the journal Aprendo con NooJ agree to the following conditions:
Authors retain copyright and grant the journal the right of first publication of the article and distribution of the article under the Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/deed.es license.
Authors may make other independent and additional contractual arrangements for the non-exclusive distribution of the version of the article published in this journal (e.g., inclusion in an institutional repository in accordance with Law 26.899 or publication in a book) as long as they clearly indicate that the work was first published in this journal.
The journal does not charge an Article Processing Charge (APC), nor does it charge for the submission of texts to the journal.
Data Availability Policy
Datos de investigación are those obtained or used by researchers during the research process that allow the validation of the research and support new knowledge. It can be physical or digital, raw or analyzed, qualitative or quantitative. Digital data can be found in many formats and can be stored on various media.
In order to promote the scientific values of replication, verification, re-analysis and re-interpretation, the Journal Aprendo con NooJ requires that the data obtained during the research described in the article be published. This requirement is established in the “New Criteria of Quality and Relevance for the Evaluation and Incorporation of Publications to the Basic Core of Argentine Scientific Journals” (RESOL-2019-1183-APN-DIR#CONICET) based on Law 26.899.
Research data from articles accepted for publication in Aprendo con NooJ must be deposited, curated and published in the RDA-UNR Academic Data Repository. Each data publication has a unique DOI identifier and a corresponding citation. In case there are limitations that prevent the sharing of data, please check the Sensitive and Confidential Data Policy.
In order to facilitate the work of curating and publishing research data, the RDA-UNR has documentation and a team of curators to help meet the requirements described here. You can consult how to start using the repository and request a virtual meeting with specialized curators.
The RDA-UNR complies with International FAIR Principles by allowing data to be found online and to have a permanent location on the Web through its DOIs. The repository facilitates the description of the data so that it is understood how it was obtained and can be downloaded. In this way, data deposited in the RDA-UNR can be integrated with other data and exchanged with other systems to optimize their reuse.
Once the data are published, they should be cited in the bibliographic references of the article. Likewise, if data from other sources have been used in the research itself, they should be cited in the references.
